To what extent have technological enhancements change the face of British broadcasting in recent years.

Technology has always been the key aspect to broadcasting, with the ever-increasing pace of technologies proliferation, the way in which we enjoy and consume broadcasting is ever changing. Portability, convergence and personalisation of these products makes the demographics feel entirely in control of the way they watch British broadcasting.

With the discovery of the Internet, the way in which broadcasting was consumed by the British public begun a radical change. Consumers were in control of when they watch their desired programme watching all of their favourite soaps and television in the comfort of their own room, on a channels website. For example BBC I player allows their demographic to view past programmes over a certain amount of days. By BBC allowing such opportunity Piracy of these programmes becomes less likely.

The convergence present with set top boxes like sky plus, allows broadcasters demographics to view, record and personalise the way in which they enjoy television. Sky plus allows audience to record, rewind and pause live television. For once the tables have turn and audience have control of nearly a thousand channels than the measly 5 it began with.

Technology such as the Epson EMP1000, and other home use projectors allow audiences to create the cinematic experience in the comfort of their own homes. With state of the art equipment available soaps and documentary can be viewed in the same way we view film. Thanks to the discovery of HD specific channels allow the audience to watch television in immaculate detail.

Technological break throughs like the Sony STR brings the pinnacle of top quality sound to our living rooms, with technologies like this available the way we view British broadcasting has changed forever. Television screens are becoming bigger and wider as unspoken competition tells us we must have a big screen.

Mobile phone convergence is allowing us to do almost anything from the palm of our hands. With gadgets like the Nokia N73 and the Ipod touch, “Mobisodes” (Mini programmes) have been growing hugely in popularity, allowing us to view television programmes anywhere we go. This growing interest in portability makes broadcasting viewable in any situation, time or place.

ICT Programme

Originally designed to be a contractor for the UK's new ITV under the self-explanatory name Incorporated Television Programme Company[1], the company failed to win a contract when the Independent Television Authority felt that doing so would give too much control in the entertainment business to the Grade family's companies (which included large talent agencies and theatre interests)[2] although the ITA said that ITPC were free to make their own programmes which they could sell to the new network companies.
However, the winner of one of the contracts, the Associated Broadcasting Development Company (also referred to as the Kelmsley/Winnick consortium) had insufficient funds to start broadcasting, so ITC was brought into the consortium and Lew Grade came to dominate it.
[3]
ITC continued as a subsidiary of the new company - originally entitled Associated Broadcasting Company but soon renamed Associated TeleVision (ATV) after threats of legal action from fellow ITV company ABC [4] - and produced its own programmes for ATV and syndication in the United States. It also distributed ATV material outside of the UK.
The initials 'ITC' stood for two different things - Independent Television Corporation for sales to North and Latin America, and Incorporated Television Company for sales to the rest of the world. The American Independent Television Corporation was formed as a joint venture with
Jack Wrather[5] in 1958. In September 1958, the Independent Television Corporation purchased Television Programs of America (TPA) for $11,350,000. Wrather sold his shares of Independent Television Corporation to Lew Grade at the end of the decade.
The large foreign sales achieved by ITC during the British government's exports drives of the 1960s and 1970s led to ATV (and its parent company from 1966, Associated Communications Corporation)
[3] receiving the Queen's Award for Export on numerous occasions.
In 2005, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company,
Network DVD released a DVD box set entitled ITC 50 featuring episodes from eighteen different ITC productions

The Peacock Committee-1986
The Peacock Committee, was a review into financing of the
BBC. It was initiated by the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher on March 27, 1985 and reporting on May 29, 1986. The committee was led by Professor Alan Peacock. The other 6 members were Samuel Brittan, Judith Chalmers, Jeremy Hardie, Professor Alastair Hetherington, Lord Quinton, and Sir Peter Reynolds [1]. Miss Kimberley Taylor was the key paper holder throughout proceedings a back seat member but later sacked and dismissed due to a national newspaper outing her as a non licence fee payer.[citation needed]The government had expected the committee to report that the television licence fee used to fund the BBC should be scrapped. However, the Peacock Committee favoured retaining the licence fee as they believed it was the 'least worst' option
The Broadcasting Act-1990
The Broadcasting Act 1990 is a law of the
British parliament, often regarded by both its supporters and its critics as a quintessential example of Thatcherism. The aim of the Act was to reform the entire structure of British broadcasting; British television, in particular, had earlier been described by Margaret Thatcher as "the last bastion of restrictive practices".
The Hutton Report- 2004
The publication in January 2004 of the Hutton Report into Dr Kelly's death was extremely critical of Andrew Gilligan, and of the Corporation's management processes and standards of journalism. In the aftermath, both the Chairman of the BBC
Gavyn Davies and the Director-General Greg Dyke resigned, followed by Gilligan himself. Lord Hutton was accused of failing to take account of the imperfections inherent in journalism, while giving the Government the benefit of the doubt over its own conduct. Large parts of the media branded it a whitewash

The future is bright for British television Broadcasting

Is The future Bright or Dull ?

Britain exports more than half the world's TV formats

British television formats is a almost always US television schedules

The UK's digital economy accounts for around 8% of GDP. It has been one of the fastest growing successes of the past decades.

Format purchasing is commonly use with broadcasters
It is alot cheaper to import something already popular than to risk the flop of a new creation.

The UK's advertising money has plummeted by £100m in the past eight years
Sites such as youtube and other video and file sharing wesites means That television broadcasting are looseing money and not recieving any royalties or funding from such webstie. Sites such as these allow audiences to watch when they want , However television companies have alsos jumped on this wagon and have uploading links to their websites to allow audience to watch there formats on their site when ever they want .
